The painting as tension retains encounters of chance occurrence. The unfounded: an encounter with what does not appear in the appearance. The painter thinks they are making a trek, an Odyssean journey of consciousness, but this traversing is connected intimately with the event of nonbeing that alone guarantees the singularity of painting. Even among configurations of signs, pathos and the theater of poetic possibility, there exits incessant withdrawal: within the marked space, which is to say the event of the marking in which the painter resides, is the affirmation of that nonbeing which is. Speculating at the vanishing point is to inscribe an impossibility.
